Senior Hosting Engineer - Operations and Management
Job Summary:
The Senior Hosting Engineer is a highly experienced and strategic professional responsible for the overall health, scalability, and security of our hosting infrastructure. This role combines advanced technical expertise with leadership and project management skills, driving continuous improvement in our services and mentoring the technical team.
Key Responsibilities:
- Infrastructure Architecture & Strategy (40%):
- Design, implement, and optimize scalable, reliable, and secure hosting architectures.
- Lead infrastructure projects from conception to completion, including new server deployments, technology upgrades, and system migrations.
- Evaluate and recommend new technologies and tools to enhance hosting performance, efficiency, and security.
- Develop and implement automation scripts for routine tasks and infrastructure provisioning.
- Plan and execute capacity planning initiatives to support business growth.
- Advanced Troubleshooting & Incident Management (30%):
- Act as the primary escalation point for critical incidents and complex technical challenges.
- Lead incident response efforts, conduct post-mortem analyses, and implement preventive measures.
- Deep dive into performance issues, identifying root causes and implementing long-term solutions.
- Develop and refine monitoring and alerting systems to ensure proactive identification of potential issues.
- Team Leadership & Mentorship (20%):
- Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior and mid-level hosting engineers.
- Conduct training sessions and knowledge-sharing initiatives within the team.
- Contribute to the development of best practices, policies, and procedures for technical operations.
- Participate in the interviewing and onboarding of new technical staff.
- Vendor Management & Compliance (10%):
- Liaise with hardware and software vendors to ensure optimal performance and support.
- Ensure compliance with industry regulations and internal security standards.
- Manage licensing and subscriptions for infrastructure tools and software.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience (5+ years in a senior hosting or systems engineering role).
- Expert-level proficiency in Linux system administration and strong understanding of various distributions.
- Extensive experience with virtualization technologies (e.g., VMware, KVM) and containerization (Docker, Kubernetes).
- Deep knowledge of networking protocols, security best practices, and firewall management.
- Proven experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud) and their services.
- Strong scripting and automation skills (e.g., Python, Ansible, Chef, Puppet).
- Experience with monitoring tools (e.g., Nagios, Zabbix, Prometheus, Grafana).
- Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to make critical decisions under pressure and lead complex projects.
- Relevant industry certifications (e.g., RHCE, AWS Certified Solutions Architect, CISSP) are highly desirable.
